Service Description

Would you love to make garments but don't know where to start? Does reading a pattern feel like a different language with words and terms you don't understand? During this 4 week course I will show you how to read a pattern, explain the terms and basic skills needed to make a garment from scratch. I will work with you, cutting out and constructing a toile (draft version of a fitted, darted shift dress) building the skills needed to apply to almost any beginner pattern. Classes are a maximum of 4 so you will get plenty of time and assistance. What Will I learn? How to read a sewing pattern. How to take measurements. Preparing and choosing your fabric. Understanding the grain. How to pin, mark and cut your fabric. How to transfer pattern markings to your fabric. Understanding notches. The order of construction. Staystitching. How to sew darts. How to sew and finish seams. How to set in a sleeve. Gathering stitches. How to sew a neck facing with interfacing. Understitching. Inserting a zipper. Hemming a skirt. Hemming a sleeve. Pressing. What Will I Make? Please note that you will not be making a garment to fit you but a basic shift dress toile (a draft version of a fitted, darted dress) so that you can work through the dressmaking skills which will give you the knowledge to make a pattern of your choice at home or book a 1 to 1 session where we can work on your pattern together. What Ability Do I Need To Have? To take part in this course you would ideally have taken the Beginners Sewing course which teaches you the basic skills of using a sewing machine or you will already know how to wind a bobbin, thread a sewing machine, have completed some projects and have confidence using a machine. What Equipment Do I Need? All sewing machines, tools, fabric, thread and notions will be provided. You will receive a PDF Beginners Dressssmaking Handbook. What Is The Age Limit? Courses are aimed at 16 years plus. If you are under 18 an adult will need to take the course with you.
